EARLY CHILDHOOD TEACHER TRAINING
IEOSA PRE-SCHOOL/EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT/KINDERGARTEN TEACHER TRAINING ACADEMY
Alhamdulillah IEOSA was the first to introduce an ‘Integrated Pre-Primary Teacher Training Course’ to its foundation phase teachers. The course was designed by merging the Islamic and secular content in a methodical, structured manner. Learners aged 3,4 and 5 previously attended the secular pre-schools in the mornings and if there was a madrasah catering for them in the afternoon they were sent here, but, were not taught any constructive work suitable for their age. Alhamdulillah we realized the need for a structured integrated syllabus and produced one after much research by qualified personnel. The formation of this syllabus meant that this age group of learners would attend the morning school at which Islamic and secular studies would be done with them.
The next step was an obvious one, being that, if a prepared syllabus was given to the teachers they themselves had to be trained how to implement an integrated syllabus in order for it be successful. Alhamdulillah this then gave rise to the first Pre-Primary/Kindergarten Teacher Teacher training course which is offered twice a week as a 1year course (Mornings : 8h15 to 12h15). Students are taught and trained to meet the needs of a child in the different areas from an Islamic perspective. The Islamic subjects are vital in the Teacher Training Course.
Islamic Subjects taught:
Hifz - Surahs and Duas
Salaah - Practicals
Fiqh and Islamic Teachings
Secular subjects taught:
Health which includes first aid
Readiness which includes:
a) The holistic development of a child
b) Sensory Motor skills
c) Numeracy skills
d) Literacy skills
e) Life Orientation
f) Practical Life skills, etc
g) Equipment making / Teaching resources
This is done to help teachers with various activities that can be implemented in class when the teacher is teaching for eg. Maths, Writing and Reading. These activities encourage the pupils to grasp the concepts more easily. It helps the child to develop physically, socially, emotionally, aesthetically and intellectually.
Psychology is taught so that the teachers are able to deal with and understand each child's total development. Methodology is done to show the different methods of implementing different concepts using modern teaching techniques. Students are also sent on school visits which assist them to get a feel of the classroom atmosphere and to gain experience whilst studying.
The examination requirements and criteria for promotion are the same as those that are applicable for the Madrasah Education Program. Course requirements are, self-study, tests, assignments, micro-teaching, and a final examination followed by a Diploma certificate to successful students.
